Guacamole (Avocado dip)

Guacamole is an avocado - based dip originally from Mexico. Because it is made from natural and fresh ingredients, it is very healthy and at the same time delicious too.

Ingredients

ripe avocados - 3
lemon - 1
salt - 1/2 tsp
cumin powder - 1/2 tsp
pepper - 1/2 tsp
onion - 1/2 finely chopped
tomato - 1 finely chopped
cilantro - few sprigs
garlic - 3 cloves finely chopped
olive oil - 1 tbsp
jalapeno - 1

Steps

1. Halve the avocados and remove the seed. Using a spoon, scoop out the flesh into a large bowl.

2. Add lemon juice, salt, cumin, ground jalapeno and pepper. Now mix and mash depending on how chunky you want the dip to be. Using a mortar and pestle instead of knives etc gives it a nice authenticity.

3. Toss in the onions, tomatoes, cilantro, and garlic. Drizzle with olive oil and mix. Let rest at room temperature for an hour before serving.

Serving ideas

Guacamole goes well with tortilla chips. You can also use it as a sandwich spread. Also goes well with rolls and chipotle style bowl.

Tips to pick ripe avocados

Avocados start to ripen only after they're picked. A ripe avocado yields to gentle pressure but is still somewhat firm. One that feels soft may very well be overripe.

If you do not find any ripe ones, you can always get the raw avocado and place it in a paper bag at room temperature. It will ripen in 3-5 days. Adding an apple to the bag speeds this process.
